HART commands for Analog Output card

Hi all,

I am trying to design a HART compatible Analog Output card. Here my question is that how can i test HART commands along with the 4-20mA signal for Analog Output card??Whether HART output devices like valve positioner ,drivers etc can only be used for testing Analog Output card??If yes, then How??

with regards,

  • You can use a HART modem that is available from different vendor from the internet. Utilize their software available to capture the HART commands being sent between the HART AO card and the device. I like to use Proconsol or mactek. They seems to be reliable. I been using their USB model and had no problem.

Any AO signal (4-20mA) going to positioner, you can use Handheld 475 to interrogate HART details from field device like Digital Valve Controller. AO signal (4-20mA) from recent HOST has HART passthrough capabilities and HOST can extract directly details like HART command 3 (Valve travel, pressure, travel set point and input current) or command 48 to display on operators screen. Also if you are using standalone device connected with a companion software you can use HART modem (Like MacTek) to pass the details to companion software.

i want to know more about how the HART is going to be communicated between host and HART output devices like valve positioner?? whether AO signal can be given to field transmitters??
  • In reply to sruthyuk:

The output to the valve positioner uses analog 4-20 mA. The digital HART communication is not real-time, that is why analog is used. HART has emphasis on transmitters so there is no universal command to send a digital output to a valve etc. The HART communication is used by the Intelligent Device Management (IDM) software part of the Asset Management System to interrogate the valve positioner using command #3 and #48 as explained by Riyaz Ali in his online post above. If you want to use digital communication for real-time PV from transmitters and output to positioners you have to use FOUNDATION fieldbus

Have you tried AMS from DeltaV? You can also put a device under digital control (works with DVC) so everything is done via HART (analog signal is fixed).
